SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The San Antonio Spurs, riding high as one of the Western Conference’s top teams, will host the struggling New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs (31-15) enter the contest having won seven of their last 10 games, including a 126-109 road victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday. All-Star forward Victor Wembanyama dominated in that win, posting 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Over his last five games, Wembanyama is averaging 28.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks, anchoring a Spurs team with legitimate championship aspirations. Conversely, the Pelicans (10-36) own the league’s worst record and are mired in a prolonged slump, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. Their most recent outing was a 112-104 home loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. Guard Micah Peavy was a bright spot in the defeat, scoring 17 points with seven rebounds. Peavy has shown flashes, including a 17-point, seven-rebound performance against Detroit and an 11-point, six-assist game against Atlanta earlier this month, but consistency has been elusive for the young guard and his team. The season series has been tightly contested but one-sided in the win column. San Antonio has won all three meetings this season, each by single digits. The most recent clash was a 135-132 Spurs victory in New Orleans on Dec. 8. The Pelicans have kept games close, including an overtime loss in October, but have been unable to secure a win. For New Orleans, stopping Wembanyama is the paramount challenge. The Pelicans will also need significant contributions from players like Saddiq Bey and Trey Murphy, who combined for 37 points in the loss to Detroit. The Spurs, meanwhile, will look to leverage their superior depth and home-court advantage to avoid a letdown against a division foe they have consistently beaten. The game tips off at 6 p.m. CST Sunday. Following this matchup, the Pelicans begin a four-game road trip in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. The Spurs will embark on a two-game trip starting Wednesday in Houston.
