Preview: Struggling Pacers Face NBA-Leading Thunder OKLAHOMA CITY (Interstat) — The Indiana Pacers, mired near the bottom of the NBA standings, face a monumental challenge Friday night when they visit the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center. The game pits teams at opposite ends of the competitive spectrum. The Thunder (36-8) own the NBA’s best record and are riding high after a 136-104 road rout of Cleveland on Monday. The Pacers (10-34) have the second-worst record in the league and are coming off a 104-113 loss in Philadelphia. Oklahoma City’s dominance is built on both ends of the floor, with center Chet Holmgren serving as a linchpin. Over his last 10 games, Holmgren is averaging 17.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, showcasing the two-way prowess that makes him a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. His 28-point, 8-rebound performance against the Cavaliers was his latest efficient outing. The Pacers’ bright spot has been the play of guard Andrew Nembhard, who is in the midst of a career-best stretch. Over his last 10 games, Nembhard is averaging 18.4 points and 7.7 assists, including a 25-point effort in the loss to the 76ers. His playmaking will be critical against Oklahoma City’s top-five defense. History suggests a high-scoring affair. The teams’ only meeting this season was a 141-135 double-overtime thriller won by the Thunder in Indianapolis on Oct. 23. The Pacers have shown sporadic offensive firepower, scoring 127 points in a win over New Orleans last week, but have also been held under 80 points in a blowout loss to Detroit. For Indiana, containing Thunder MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 30 in the Cleveland win, will be a primary concern alongside managing Holmgren’s rim protection. The Thunder have won eight of their last 10 and begin a tough stretch of their schedule after this game, with upcoming road contests against Minnesota and Denver. The Pacers, opening a five-game road trip, are seeking any momentum before visiting Atlanta on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Friday at Paycom Center.
