Spurs, Timberwolves Clash in Key Western Conference Matchup MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Two of the Western Conference’s top teams will meet Sunday when the San Antonio Spurs visit the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center. The Spurs (26-12) enter with a narrow lead over the Timberwolves (25-14) in the standings, adding stakes to the teams’ second meeting this season. Minnesota won the first matchup 125-112 on Nov. 30. San Antonio arrives following a 107-91 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. Forward Keldon Johnson led the way with 27 points and six rebounds, continuing a strong stretch where he has scored 20 or more points in four of his last 10 games. Rookie Stephon Castle added 15 points and five rebounds, while star big man Victor Wembanyama posted 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. The Spurs have gone 6-4 over their last 10 games. Minnesota looks to rebound after a high-scoring 146-134 road loss to Cleveland on Saturday. Despite the defeat, center Naz Reid was efficient off the bench, scoring 23 points in 28 minutes. Reid has provided consistent scoring punch for the Timberwolves, including a 33-point performance against Chicago on Dec. 29. The Timberwolves’ interior defense, anchored by Rudy Gobert, will be tested by Wembanyama’s unique skill set. Minnesota has won seven of its last 10 contests. Sunday’s game is the first of a home-and-home set between the clubs, who will meet again in San Antonio on Jan. 17. Key Players to Watch: Spurs – Keldon Johnson: The versatile forward is averaging 17.1 points over his last 10 games and is a key offensive catalyst. Timberwolves – Naz Reid: The Sixth Man candidate gives Minnesota a major scoring and energy boost off the bench, capable of changing a game’s momentum. The matchup tips off at 7 p.m. EST Sunday at Target Center.
