PREVIEW: Twins Host Angels in Sunday Afternoon Rubber Match MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Minnesota Twins host the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday at Target Field for the decisive game of their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under partly cloudy skies with a temperature of 89 degrees. The Twins (47-49) evened the series with a 5-3 win Saturday, bouncing back from a 4-3 loss in the opener Friday. Minnesota, which sits just two games under .500, will look to build momentum heading into the All-Star break against a struggling Angels club that has lost 10 of its last 12 games and owns the AL’s worst record at 38-58. Right-hander Joe Ryan (2-1 in his last four starts) takes the mound for Minnesota. He earned the win Saturday in the series opener, allowing two earned runs over six innings with six strikeouts. Ryan’s recent form has been strong — he tossed seven scoreless innings July 5 against the New York Yankees, striking out nine, and has 31 strikeouts over his last 24 innings. The Angels counter with right-hander Ryan Johnson, who lasted just five innings in Saturday’s loss, surrendering three earned runs on three hits. Johnson (1-4 over his last five outings) showed dominance June 23 against Baltimore, throwing six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, but consistency has eluded him. His ERA over his last three starts sits at 4.50. Saturday’s win featured a two-run homer from Royce Lewis, who went 2-for-4. First baseman Nolan Schanuel drove in the Angels’ only run in the loss, going 2-for-4. The Twins are favored by 1.5 runs with an over/under of 8.5. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-2 Minnesota victory. Following the series finale, the Angels return home for a six-game homestand against Detroit and St. Louis beginning July 17. The Twins travel to Chicago for a three-game set against the Cubs starting the same day.
