CHICAGO (Interstat) β The Chicago Cubs host the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field, with first pitch set for 1:20 p.m. under cloudy skies and a game-time temperature of 93 degrees. The Cubs (47-38) have won four of the past five meetings against the Padres (43-40), including a 5-1 victory Tuesday and a 3-2 win Monday. Left-hander Shota Imanaga (7-3, 3.45 ERA) takes the mound for Chicago. He earned the win in Mondayβs 3-2 decision over San Diego, allowing two earned runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out four. In his past three starts, Imanaga is 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA, though he has allowed at least four earned runs in two of his last five outings. San Diego counters with right-hander Griffin Canning (4-6, 5.22 ERA). Canning also pitched Monday, taking the loss after giving up two earned runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He has been inconsistent of late: In his previous start he allowed four earned runs in two-thirds of an inning against Atlanta, but he sandwiched that with a 4 1/3-inning, one-run effort at St. Louis and a five-inning, one-run outing against the Mets. The Cubs have won six of their last eight games, including a 10-inning victory Sunday at Milwaukee. The Padres dropped three of four to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend before losing the first two games of this series. Chicago leads the National League Central by 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee. San Diego is third in the NL West, 5 1/2 games behind the Dodgers. The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-5 Cubs victory. After this game, the Padres travel to Los Angeles for a four-game series against the Dodgers starting Thursday, while the Cubs return home to face St. Louis on Friday.
