AP Sports Preview SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres open a three-game series Monday night at PETCO Park, with the Cubs looking to snap a two-game skid and the Padres aiming to rebound from a high-scoring loss. Left-hander Matthew Boyd (1-1) is scheduled to start for Chicago (17-11). Boyd will be opposed by San Diego right-hander Randy Vásquez (2-0), who has yet to lose a decision this season. The Cubs are coming off a 6-0 shutout loss Sunday at the Los Angeles Dodgers, their second consecutive defeat after winning five straight. Chicago’s offense managed just four hits in the loss. Right-handed reliever Yacksel Ríos was a bright spot for the Cubs on Sunday, working 1⅔ scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. The Padres (18-9) dropped a 12-7 decision Sunday at Arizona, despite a monster game from third baseman Manny Machado, who went 2 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Machado is 5 for 16 with three homers and six RBIs over his past four games. San Diego had won four of five before Sunday’s loss. The Padres lead the National League West. Monday’s matchup is the first of 10 consecutive games at home for San Diego, while the Cubs begin a six-game West Coast swing. The Interstat game simulator projects Chicago as an 8-7 winner. The Cubs are a minus-1.5 favorite. The over/under is 7½ runs. After Monday, the teams meet again Tuesday and Wednesday at PETCO Park.
