Preview: Padres Look to Extend Division Lead at Coors Field DENVER (Interstat) — The National League West-leading San Diego Padres will send right-hander Walker Buehler to the mound Wednesday night looking to continue their early-season dominance over the struggling Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The Padres (15-7) have won four of their last five and are 4-0 against the Rockies (9-14) this season, outscoring Colorado 28-12 in a series sweep in San Diego from April 9-12. The teams opened this three-game set with a scoreless tie Tuesday that was suspended due to inclement weather in the fifth inning. That game will be completed Thursday. Buehler (1-1) will face a Rockies lineup that was throttled 12-3 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday but had won three of its previous four. The high altitude of Denver always presents a challenge for pitchers, but the Padres’ staff has handled it well against Colorado this year. A key player for San Diego is right-hander Michael King, who has been stellar in a hybrid role. In his last appearance Sunday, King earned the win with five scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out six in a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Over his last three outings, he has a 1.69 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 17 innings. For the Rockies, outfielder Jordan Beck is a player to watch. He went 3 for 4 with an RBI in Monday’s loss, providing a bright spot in a lineup that has struggled for consistency. Beck was 1 for 11 in the earlier series at San Diego. The Padres have been buoyed by strong pitching, posting a 2.50 team ERA in their four wins over Colorado this season. The Rockies will counter Wednesday with a starter to be announced as they navigate a bullpen taxed by Monday’s blowout and Tuesday’s suspended game. According to National Statistical’s game simulator, the Padres are projected to win 8-3. After the series concludes Thursday, the Padres head to Arizona for a weekend set, while the Rockies embark on a seven-game road trip to New York and Cincinnati.
