CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to complete a series sweep and extend their strong early-season start when they face the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a three-game set Sunday at Wrigley Field. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures around 55 degrees. The Pirates (9-5) have taken the first two games of the series, including a 4-3, 11-inning victory Saturday. Pittsburgh’s pitching has stifled the Cubs (6-8), allowing just three total runs in the series so far. Right-hander Bubba Chandler (0-1) is the probable starter for Pittsburgh. He will be opposed by Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon (0-1). A player to watch for the Pirates is right-hander Braxton Ashcraft, who delivered a dominant performance in Saturday’s win, striking out nine over five innings while allowing one earned run. In his last three starts, he has a 2.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 17 innings. For the Cubs, reliever Ben Brown has been a bright spot. He pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts Saturday and has allowed just one earned run over his last 9 1/3 innings of work out of the bullpen, fanning 14 batters. Despite Pittsburgh’s recent success, statistical projections are mixed. National Statistical’s game simulator predicts a 6-4 Pirates victory, while the same outlet’s ELO rating system gives the Cubs a 60.4% probability to win. Following the game, the Pirates return home to open a four-game series with the Washington Nationals on Monday. The Cubs embark on a road trip, starting a three-game set in Philadelphia against the Phillies on Monday.
